You've Got Time

Description

"You've Got Time" is a song originally composed, recorded, and released by Regina Spektor. The song was composed as the main title theme song for the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. The song was first released as a single on 2013-07-09, eventually also being released on the soundtrack for the show Orange Is the New Black: Music from the Original Series in 2014. A live performance was performed, recorded, and released as part of the live LP Live on Soundstage, released in 2017. A chamber version of "You've Got Time" was released on 2019-07-26 to coincide with the release of the seventh and final season of Orange Is the New Black.

Regina was likely approached to write the song due to her contribution to series creator Jenji Kohan's previous show Weeds, where she recorded a cover of the song's theme song, "Little Boxes". Kohan noted, “I listened to Regina’s albums obsessively while writing the series, so I immediately thought of her for our theme song. I had total faith in her and she nailed it.” In a 2013 interview, Regina noted that Kohan gave her early access to unfinished episodes to give her a sense of the show. Describing her writing process for the song, Regina said, "It was mostly just that and thinking about the idea of what it must be like to be in prison and the different states of mind. One of the things she told me when we had lunch that first time was that it might be really cool to use ideas that obviously come to your mind if you're thinking of somebody in prison. It wasn't anything super duper out of the ordinary."

"You've Got Time" was nominated for a Grammy during 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014.

The song was first performed live on 2013-07-09 and would continue to be a featured song in setlists through 2019.

Lyrics

The animals, the animals
Trap, trap, trap 'til the cage is full
The cage is full
Stay awake
In the dark, count mistakes
The light was off but now it's on
Searching underground for a bit of sun
The sun is out, the day is new
And everyone is waiting, waiting on you
And you've got time
And you've got time
Think of all the roads
Think of all their crossings
Taking steps is easy
Standing still is hard
Remember all their faces
Remember all their voices
Everything is different
The second time around
The animals, the animals
Trap, trap, trap 'til the cage is full
The cage is full
Stay awake
In the dark, count mistakes
The light was off but now it's on
Searching underground for a bit of sun
The sun is out, the day is new
And everyone is waiting, waiting on you
And you've got time
And you've got time
And you've got time
