Wallet

Description

"Wallet", sometimes called "The Wallet", is a song orginally composed, performed, recorded and released by Regina Spektor. The song was first performed on 2004-07-10 at Tonic in New York, NY. A few months later, a demo was recorded as part of the 2004 studio session demos.

"Wallet" was performed peridodically between 2004 and 2009, including several in studio performances. The song was officially released on the LP Far on 2009-06-21. "Wallet" was performed extensively in 2009 and 2010 in the tour supporting Far. One of of these performances was officially recorded and released on the live LP Live in London. The song would go on to be played in 2011 and 2012 and not again until a string of performances in 2018, with its final performance on 2018-08-08 at Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, New York.

In a 2008 interview with American Songwriter, Regina speaks about "Wallet": “It’s like one of those songs that you listen to from the 20s and ask, “What’s a kaputnik?” It’s this thing that was obviously very important because they’re singing about it, but it just doesn’t exist anymore. That’s why Bach and Mozart had it right by not putting in any words and making timeless instrumental music. In 300 years, when our great-great-great-grandchildren are checking out music by putting their finger into entertainment sockets, they’re not going to know what “Blockbuster” or “Netflix” or “Juicy Fruit” are. They’ll be like, “What’s fruit?” They’ll probably be living in a cement pod and eating food through intravenous tubes.”

Lyrics

I found a wallet
I found a wallet
Inside were pictures of your small family
You were so young
Your hair dark brown
You had been born in 1953
Your winter birthday
Was stamped on the plastic
Of a license so recently expired
I was so tired
As I walked through my door
I laid all the contents of your wallet on the floor
And like a holy relic
Or a mystery novel
I thumbed them in the dim light
Searching for a clue
A Blockbuster card
An old stick of Juicyfruit
A crumpled receipt
From a pair of leather boots
I have no wallet
I have no wallet
I keep my cards together with a blue rubber band
And with a free hand
I search in my pockets
For pieces of, pieces of paper and change
I'll take your wallet
To my local Blockbuster
They'll find your number
In their computer
You'll never know me
I'll never know you
But you'll be so happy
When they call you up
