"The Sword & the Pen" is a song originally composed, performed, recorded, and released by Regina Spektor. The song was first released on the deluxe edition of the LP Far, released on 2009-06-23. Until this release, "The Sword & the Pen" was previously unknown, as its first performance was not until 2009-10-04, several months after its official release. An acoustic version of the song was released as a b-side to the single "Eet" on 2009-11-27. Nearly two years after its original release, "The Sword & the Pen" was featured on the EP Four from Far, released on 2011-04-16.
"The Sword & the Pen" has only been performed thirteen times between 2009 and 2012. Notably, it was one of the two songs played for President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at The White House on 2010-05-27.
