Ne Me Quitte Pas

Description

"Ne Me Quitte Pas" is a song originally composed, performed, recorded, and released by Regina Spektor. The song was first performed and recorded as part of the Two Jews on Christmas session on 2001-12-25 and subsequently released on the album Songs in early 2002. Currently, the song is only available to listen via an out-of-print CD, as the album Songs is not available on streaming and has had no subsequent releases since the original CD pressings.

"Ne Me Quitte Pas" was rerecorded and released in 2011 as "Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)", first as a single and music video and later as part of the album What We Saw from the Cheap Seats. "Ne Me Quitte Pas" differs from "Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)" by being a much more stripped down version (mostly just piano and voice), lacking the production of the new version.

"Ne Me Quitte Pas" was first performed live on 2002-05-15 at The Living Room in Brooklyn, NY and would go on to be performed a number of times between 2002 and 2009, after which the more produced "Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)" began to replace it in live set rotations. Despite this, versions more akin to the original "Ne Me Quitte Pas" were performed twice in 2019 – including at the final show of the Sidewalk Cafe in New York, NY on 2019-02-18 and a performance at WNYC Radio in New York, NY on 2019-05-28.

Note that "Ne Me Quitte Pas" has no bearing to the 1959 song by Jacques Brel other than sharing a title..

Lyrics

Down on Bowery they lose their
Ball-eyes and their lip-mouths in the night
And stumbling through the streets they say
"Sir, do you got a light?"
And if you do then you're my friend
And if you don't then you're my foe
And if you are a deity of any sort
Then please don't go
Ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ah ah ah ah ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
And down on Lexington they're wearing
New shoes stuck to aging feet
And close their eyes and open
And they'll recognize the aging street
And think about how things were right
When they were young and veins were tight
And if you are the ghost of Christmas Past
Then wont you stay the night?
Ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ah ah ah ah ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ah ah ah ah ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Down in Bronxy-Bronx the kids go
Sledding down snow-covered slopes
And frozen noses, frozen toes
The frozen city starts to glow
And yes, they know that it'll melt
And yes, the know New York will thaw
But if you are a friend of any sort
Then play along and catch a cold!
Ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ah ah ah ah ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
Ah ah ah ah ne me quitte pas, mon chere
Ne me quitte pas
I love Paris in the rain
I love Paris in the rain
I love, I love, in the rain
I love Paris in the rain
I love Paris in the rain
I love, I love, in the rain
Oh I love, I love, in the rain
Oh I love, I love, in the rain
Oh I love, I love, in the rain
