Left Hand Song

Description

"Left Hand Song" is a song originally composed, performed, and recorded by Regina Spektor. The song was played two times in 2002 and then off-and-on between 2007 and 2010 before being extensively played in 2017 as part of the "Very Special Solo Tour". The song was known for a long time by fans by the name "A Lesson in How Fleeting Preservation Is", taken from a lyric in the song. In 2009, Regina recorded and released the song as "Left Hand Song", the first time the song had an official name, as part of Joshua Bell's album At Home wiith Friends. The official release incorporates a string section by Joshua Bell into Regina's piano and vocals. A 2009 performance at WRXP FM Radio is of particularly note-worthy quality and resembles a demo more in line with early performances which only feature piano and vocals.

Lyrics

Too much time spent
Trying to crawl into a hole
And trying to crawl out of that hole
I followed a path of a piece of bread traveling
From one little sparrow's beak
To another little sparrow's beak
He picked it up, flew with it and then dropped it, then
This other one picked it up and flew with it and again
Then they broke it into pieces
Ate it up and forgot that it ever existed
They were still hungry, at the end
They were still hungry at the end
I was inside my office at the time
And I got real scared
Thought I saw two snakes slithering
Then I remembered
Snakes don't live in carpeted areas
Too much time spent
And I'm spent
There is an old meatball wrapped inside of tinfoil
Lying on the bottom shelf of our fridge
A lesson in how fleeting preservation is
