Halloween

Description

"Halloween" is a song originally composed and performed by Regina Spektor and Jack Dishel. The song was never officially recorded or released. "Halloween" was first performed live at The Belasco in Los Angeles, CA on 2025-02-22 as part of the Songs (and Other Songs) series of shows. The song was performed an additional two more times during the same run of shows, the next day also at The Belasco on 2025-02-23 and finally at Thalia Hall on 2025-03-03 in Chicago, IL.

Jack Dishel confirmed that the song was partially written in 2006 but not completed until the week before its live debut. Given when the song was first written and content of the songs lyrics (referencing "Silver Lake", a town in California and "Halloween"), it's likely that the song was first conceived near the time of Regina's performance in Avalon, CA on 2006-11-02.

Lyrics

It's Halloween in Silver Lake
You're Oswald and I'm JFK
We don't know half the people here
But the bathtub's full of ice and beer

That flapper there by Frankenstein
cut Chaplin on the bathroom line
He made a face behind her back
and the zombie girls tried not to laugh

We spoke outside beneath the ghosts
and talked about the other coast

Our friends are living everywhere
in different states of disrepair

We used to say "we're gonna do it"
But now it's different shades of "screw it"

Oh dreams, oh dreams, where have you gone?

See that guy in normal clothes
Teaching Einstein dominoes

He'd stand on bars and read aloud
The words he said sent chills around

But now his eyes are so detached
from chasing things he couldn't catch

A simple win was all he needed
But every time he left defeated

Oh dreams, oh dreams, what have you done?

It's 6AM
We're still awake
You're Oswald and I'm JFK
But you and I won't stand around
While shots from nowhere take us down

Yeah you and I won't stand around
While shots from nowhere take us down
The sun is up, the party's done
The monsters are all going home

Oh dreams, oh dreams, wait up for me
