Gonna Lay My Heart on the Line

Description

"Gonna Lay My Heart on the Line" is a cover of a Anne Phillips song recorded and performed by Regina Spektor. Regina recorded and performed this song as part of the film Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control, first released on June 9th, 2002.

A collection of five songs was first identified by Regina in a post on her original forums on March 9th, 2002. However, the exact cover songs were unknown for many years as the movie never was officially released outside of a short festival run. In 2022, a copy of the screener for the movie emerged, from which "Gonna Lay My Heart on the Line" was found.

"Gonna Lay My Heart on the Line" plays during the firm and only features a snippet from the song. Regina noted that she never received a copy of the full version of this recording, and so only this snippet is available.

Lyrics

I’m gonna lay my heart on the line
And then I’ll step back and watch you
While you trample it and
And tear it all apart
And then I’ll say, “Well friend,
That’s the chance you take
That’s the chance you take
When you lay down
When you lay your heart down
On the line”

I’m gonna lay my heart on the line
And then I’ll step back
And watch you while you laugh at it
And treat it like a lark
And then I’ll say, “Well friend,
That’s the chance you take
That’s the chance you take
When you lay it down
When you lay your heart down
On the line”

Hey,
It’s a cruel, cruel world
Trust in everybody just the same
People say you’re a fool, fool girl
Being honest ain’t the way you ought to play the game

I’m gonna lay my heart out on the line
And then I’ll step back
And watch you while you trample it
And tear it all apart
And then I’ll say, “Well friend,
That’s the chance you take
When you lay it down
When you lay your heart down on the line”

Hey, it’s a cruel, cruel world
Trust in everybody just the same
People say, you’re a fool, fool girl
Being honest ain’t the way you ought to play the game

I’m gonna lay my heart on the line
And then I’ll step back
And watch you
While you trample it and
Tear it all apart
And then I’ll say, “Well friend,
That’s the chance you take
When you lay it down
When you lay your heart down
On the line”
