Description
"Fidelity" is a song orginally composed, performed, recorded and released by Regina Spektor. The earliest known performance of the song occurred on 2005-01-21 at Bowery Ballroom in New York, NY. However, in an interview and performance which aired on 2005-01-28, Regina notes that she had "just wrote a song last night, and I don't know if I remember it but I really want to remember it", then proceeding to play "Fidelity". While the air date of this performance is known, the recording date is not, and so this performance is likely to be the first. The song is rumored to be named after the film High Fidelity, which Regina was rumored to be watching when the inspiration for the song came, though this rumor has not be verified.
"Fidelity" was first released on the LP Begin to Hope on 2006-06-13. A music video for the song was released in late 2006. Early the next year, the song was released as the second single from Begin to Hope on 2007-02-26.
After its release, "Fidelity" would begin to feature prominantly on live setlists, which continues to the present day. The song is included on the vast majority of live shows, usually functioning towards the end of the set or post-encore. Four of these performances were officially recorded and released on the EP Live in California EP, released in 2006, the EP Live at Lollapalooza 2007 EP, released in 2007, the LP Live in London, released in 2010 , and the live LP Live on Soundstage, released in 2017.
