Same Drugs

Description

"Same Drugs" is a Chance the Rapper song which originally featured Regina Spektor on vocals and piano. First identified in a tweet on 2016-06-09, Chance noted: "Listening to old versions of the songs from Coloring Book. Same Drugs had Regina Spektor on it. Not using this may be my biggest mistake." Chance would go on to say in an interview with Tom Cridland in 2020 that "Regina Spektor is one of the greatest artists of all time".

In an interview with Harper's BAZAAR on 2016-10-04, Regina was asked about the collaboration. Regarding her contributions, Regina noted that she was asked to contribute vocals but had a hard time finding a space for them as the song already felt complete. Additionally, she wrote a piano bridge for the song. Ultimately, Chance, with little time before the album was set to release, felt too attached to the original version of "Same Drugs" provided to Regina and opted to release that version instead. When asked about a potential release for the song, Regina noted: "I don't know, it's up to Chance. I mean, I have too much respect, I gave him what I had. I would never want somebody to put up a song of mine that I didn't approve. So, for now, it's just me and him that have it. But if he ever wants to put it out I'm never going to say no to him."

Lyrics

We don't do the same drugs no more
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more
'Cause she don't do the same drugs no more
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more
When did you change?
Wendy, you've aged
I thought you'd never grow up
I thought you'd never
Window closed, Wendy got old
I was too late, I was too late
A shadow of what I once was
'Cause we don't, do the same drugs no more
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more
She don't laugh the same way no more
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more
Where did you go?
Why would you stay?
You must have lost your marbles
You always were so forgetful
In a hurry, don't wait up
I was too late, I was too late
A shadow of what I once was
'Cause we don't, we don't
Do what we say we're gonna
You were always perfect, and I was only practice
Don't you miss the days, stranger?
Don't you miss the days?
Don't you miss the danger?
We don't (We don't)
Do the same drugs no more (Do the same drugs no more)
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more (Do the same drugs no more)
We don't (We don't)
Do the same drugs no more (Do the same drugs no more)
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Don't forget the happy thoughts
All you need is happy thoughts
The past tense, past bed time
Way back then when everything we read was real
And everything we said rhymed
Wide-eyed kids being kids
Why did you stop?
What did you do to your hair?
Where did you go to end up right back here?
When did you start to forget how to fly?
Don't you color out
Don't you bleed on out, oh
Stay in the line, stay in the line
Dandelion
Do the same drugs no more
We don't do the, we don't do the same drugs
Do the same drugs no more
(We don't, we don't, we don't)
Don't you color out
Don't you bleed on out, oh
Stay in the line, stay in the line
Dandelion
