Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control

Jun 9, 2002

Description:

Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control is a film, directed by Barry Alexander Brown and starring Bronson Pinchot, Amy Carlson, and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, which premiered at the Seattle Film Festival on 2002-06-09. The film is notable because it features Regina Spektor's acting debut, as well as numerous song performances only available via this release.

The film was first discovered by brümstix user Priz who posted on 2003-03-09 that they had recently seen Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control: "They were both funny and quite entertaining... but I REALLY loved the music in "Winning Girls"... mainly the random songs throughout the film by the character Kathy. I looked at the film's credits and it lists the vocals for these songs as actually done by Regina, not by Amy Carlson (who played the role for Kathy). I wrote the name down, did a little askpriz.com search and found this site. (I assume this is the same Regina Spektor... there's enough similarities for me to draw the conclusion that it is.) I was surprised that the site for the film doesn't even mention the music."

Regina responded: "hey priz, yeah, i did 5 of the songs on that soundrack my senior year of college... one of them is an original from my album "11:11", called "I want to Sing" but rerecorded at a profesional studio for the film... The others were covers. I saw the film once, at the Sony HDV theatre, there was a screaning, and i hadn't heard much else about the film after... I am real glad that you got to see it, hopefully it'll play around this area again some... It was pretty strange to see Amy Carson sing with my voice... like that scene in "the Little Mermaid"... anyhow:-) I wish I had a copy of the music as well, but even i never got a copy of the songs we recorded... If i ever do, i wil definately get some up on the site... You reminded me to try and get a copy, thanx... Take care, and thanks much for writing, chears, loops, film creadits, regina"

The film had debuted at the 2002 Seatle International Film Festival on 2002-06-09 and continued to play at various film festivals through 2005. However, "Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control" never received a broader theatrical release nor any sort of home media or streaming release. For a long time, the film was considered lost media, and its connection to Regina remained a mystery for fans for many years.

Eventually in 2022, a fan from the old brümstix forums returned with an evaluation copy of the "Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control", which allowed fans to identify Regina Spektor's specific contributions to the film.

Throughout the film, Regina plays five songs with vocals usually dubbed over Amy Carlson's character , Kathy. The film begins with "I Put a Spell on You", during which Regina's bit part as "Girl Who Lost Ring" is played out. The next song featured is Regina's original "I Want to Sing", which was rerecorded for this film from its earlier recording on 11:11. The next two covers include "My World Is Empty Without You" and Gonna Lay My Heart on the Line. Regina's final contribution to the film is an instrumental version of Anyone Who Had a Heart.

These five songs were never officially released and never saw any release outside of their appearance in the film on the film festival circuit. Due to the timing of the film, it can be assumed that the songs were all recorded in late 2001 or early 2002.
