Interviews
The World (PRI)
May 28, 2012

Description:
Regina Spektor discusses her new album What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, which draws from her unique Russian heritage and American upbringing. Born in Moscow, she moved to the Bronx at age nine. Her music blends both worlds, from covering songs by Soviet bards like Bulat Okudzhava to experimenting with indie sounds. Spektor reflects on her deep connection to Russian literature and shares the story behind one of Okudzhava’s songs she covered, "Stariy Pedjak" ("Old Jacket"), about a man hoping a tailor's alterations will change his luck — a metaphor for the way people cling to hope. She talks about her excitement at returning to Russia for the first time since emigrating, a significant emotional journey.
